Biography

Sergeant William Openshaw served with the Chindits, Orde Wingate's long-range penetration force operating behind Japanese lines in Burma. His column marched over 1,000 miles through dense jungle, surviving on air-dropped supplies. The Chindits suffered appalling casualties from disease, exhaustion, and combat. William contracted malaria and dysentery but continued fighting. After the war he returned to Manchester, where the physical toll of the Burma campaign meant he was never able to work full-time again.

Сержант Уильям Опеншо служил в отрядах Чиндитов, глубинном проникающем отряде Орда Уингейта, действовавшем за японскими линиями в Бирме. Его колонна прошла более 1600 км через густые джунгли. После войны вернулся в Манчестер.
