Nikolai Gavrilovich was restless after seeing his sons off to the front. He repeatedly asked to volunteer, but he suffered from stomach problems, and the commission kept returning him home.
But in mid-1942, Nikolai Gavrilovich packed his knapsack, went to the regional center, and spent a week trying to get sent to the front. Apparently, his cousin helped; he was mobilized, but due to his poor health, he was assigned to work as a wagon driver.
According to relatives, Nikolai Gavrilovich died after surgery and was buried in Omsk.

Николай Гаврилович места себе не мог найти после проводов сыновей на фронт. Просился много раз добровольцем, но были проблемы с желудком, его комиссия возвращала домой.
Но в середине 1942 года Николай Гаврилович собрал котомку, уехал в районный центр и неделю добивался , что бы его отправили на фронт. Видимо помог двоюродный брат, его мобилизовали, но по состоянию здоровья его определили обозником.
Со слов родственников, Николай Гаврилович умер после операции и похоронен в Омске.
