In October 1941, at the age of forty-three, he was called up again, and from 1943 he was with the army in the field. He joined the Communist Party in 1943. He served as commander of a sabre platoon in the 62nd Guards Cavalry Regiment of the 16th Guards Chernigov Cavalry Division — the former 112th Bashkir Cavalry Division, formed in Ufa in December 1941 — in the 7th Guards Cavalry Corps of the 61st Army, Central Front. He distinguished himself in the battle of the Dnieper.
