Biography
Petty Officer Thomas William Gould earned the Victoria Cross for extraordinary bravery aboard submarine HMS Thrasher in the Mediterranean in February 1942. After an attack on an Axis supply ship, two unexploded bombs became lodged in the submarine's casing. Gould and Lieutenant Peter Roberts crawled along the narrow space between the submarine's hull and casing to remove the bombs by hand, fully aware that any movement could detonate them and destroy the vessel. After the war, Gould settled in Manchester and became active in veterans' organisations, quietly championing submarine service recognition.
