Biography

Private Tommy Butterworth was among the Manchester Regiment soldiers evacuated from Dunkirk in June 1940. After wading chest-deep into the sea under Stuka dive-bomber attacks, he was pulled aboard a Thames pleasure steamer. He later fought in Normandy and across Northwest Europe, ending the war in Hamburg. He told his family he never forgot the sight of the oil-black water and burning ships at Dunkirk, or the kindness of the civilian boat crews who risked everything to rescue them.
