Biography

Rita Goldberg arrived in Manchester as a Jewish refugee from Vienna in 1939, just months before war broke out. Though classified as an "enemy alien" due to her Austrian citizenship, she was determined to contribute to the war effort against the Nazis who had destroyed her family's life. She worked in a Manchester factory producing aircraft parts and also volunteered as a translator for the Home Office, helping process intelligence gathered from intercepted German documents. After the war, she dedicated herself to Holocaust education.
