Biography

Bombardier Norman Butterworth from Salford served with a field artillery regiment that landed on Gold Beach on D-Day. His battery provided fire support for the infantry advance through Normandy and the breakout from the bocage. He was awarded the Military Medal for directing accurate fire during the crossing of the River Orne despite being under intense mortar bombardment. He fought through Belgium, Holland, and into Germany, and was among the first Allied troops to reach the Elbe. After the war, he worked at the Trafford Park industrial estate and coached boys' football in Salford for decades.

Бомбардир Норман Баттеруорт из Солфорда служил в полку полевой артиллерии, высадившемся на пляже Голд в день «Д». Награждён Военной медалью за точное ведение огня при переправе через реку Орн. Прошёл через Бельгию, Голландию и Германию. После войны работал в промзоне Трэффорд-парк и десятилетиями тренировал мальчиков в футбол.
