Biography

First Officer Mona Friedlander was one of the "Ata-girls" — women pilots of the Air Transport Auxiliary who ferried military aircraft from factories to operational bases across Britain. Of Jewish-German heritage, she had a deeply personal motivation for fighting fascism. She flew over 30 types of aircraft during the war, including Spitfires, Hurricanes, Mosquitos, and four-engine bombers like the Lancaster. ATA pilots flew without radios, weapons, or instrument training, navigating by map reading alone and in all weather conditions. 174 ATA pilots were killed during the war. After the war, Friedlander became one of Britain's first female commercial pilots. Manchester celebrates her story as part of its aviation heritage.
