Biography
Jack Whitworth was a rear gunner with 617 Squadron — the famous Dambusters. He did not fly on the original dams raid of May 1943 but joined the squadron shortly after. He flew on precision bombing raids including the sinking of the German battleship Tirpitz in November 1944 using Barnes Wallis's Tallboy bombs. Rear gunners, sitting isolated in their turrets, had one of the highest casualty rates in Bomber Command. Jack flew 38 operations and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal. After the war he returned to Manchester and worked in the cotton trade.
