Biography

Lieutenant George Roper served in the Royal Engineers Bomb Disposal unit during the Manchester Blitz of Christmas 1940. His team defused unexploded bombs across the city, working in conditions of extreme danger — one wrong move meant instant death. He personally defused over forty unexploded bombs during the war, including a massive 1,000 kg device found near Manchester Cathedral. He was awarded the George Medal for his extraordinary courage. After the war he worked quietly as a civil engineer, rarely speaking of his wartime exploits.

Лейтенант Джордж Ропер служил в сапёрном подразделении по обезвреживанию бомб во время Манчестерского блица в декабре 1940 года. Он лично обезвредил более сорока неразорвавшихся бомб, за что получил Медаль Георга.
