Biography
Air Commodore Sir Frank Whittle invented the turbojet engine, one of the most transformative innovations in aviation history. His first jet engine ran in 1937, and the Gloster E.28/39 made its first flight with a Whittle engine on 15 May 1941 — Britain's first jet aircraft.Despite his genius, Whittle faced years of official indifference and struggled with inadequate funding. The Manchester area became a centre for jet engine development through companies like Rolls-Royce. His invention revolutionised both military and civilian aviation.
