Biography

Edith Roper drove ambulances through the Manchester Blitz of December 1940, when the Luftwaffe launched two devastating raids on the city. During the Christmas Blitz, with the city centre ablaze and roads blocked by rubble, she made 17 rescue runs in a single night, pulling casualties from collapsed buildings in Piccadilly and Market Street. She was awarded the George Medal for her extraordinary bravery. She continued driving ambulances throughout the war, serving whenever the city was attacked.

Эдит Ропер водила машины скорой помощи во время Манчестерского Блица в декабре 1940 года. Во время рождественского Блица, когда центр города горел, она совершила 17 спасательных рейсов за одну ночь, вытаскивая пострадавших из разрушенных зданий. Она была награждена Медалью Георга за исключительную храбрость.
