Biography

Barnes Wallis was the brilliant aviation engineer who invented the "bouncing bomb" used in the famous Dambusters raid of May 1943. His ingenious weapon, designed to skip across water and breach the Möhne and Eder dams in Germany's industrial heartland, was one of the most innovative weapons of the war.Beyond the bouncing bomb, Wallis designed the Wellington bomber — whose geodetic construction made it exceptionally tough — and later developed the massive Tallboy and Grand Slam earthquake bombs that destroyed hardened targets including the Tirpitz and V-weapon sites.
