Yakov Mikhailovich Levin fought as a partisan commander in the forests of Belarus from 1942 to 1944. He led a unit of 40 fighters who conducted sabotage operations against German supply lines and helped evacuate Jewish families from the Minsk ghetto. After the war he emigrated to London in 1972, where he worked as an engineer and rarely spoke of his wartime experiences until his grandchildren persuaded him to record his story.
