Biography
Lieutenant Robert James commanded a Cromwell tank with the 7th Armoured Division — the famous "Desert Rats." He first saw action in North Africa and then fought through Normandy and into Germany. During the advance on Hamburg in April 1945, his tank was the first to reach a displaced persons camp, liberating hundreds of forced labourers. The experience of encountering the gaunt, starving survivors convinced him to devote his post-war career to humanitarian work. He settled in Bristol and worked for the United Nations refugee agency.
