Born in a small Gloucestershire mining village, enlisted in the British army in 1919. Served in Ireland, Egypt and Britain. As a 20 year veteran by the time Britain declared war on Germany, he was drill sergeant training recruits in WWII. The family were bombed out twice by Luftwaffe air raids during the war.
