Phyllis Latour Doyle

Flight Officer Phyllis Latour Doyle, codenamed "Geneviève," parachuted into Normandy on 1 May 1944, five weeks before D-Day, to gather intelligence for the Allied invasion. Born in South Africa to a French mother, she spoke fluent French and used multiple cover identities. Working as a 23-year-old wireless operator, she transmitted 135 coded messages to London about German positions, troop movements, and coastal defences. She cycled hundreds of miles through occupied territory, often with her coding silk hidden in her hair. She was never captured despite several close calls. After the war, she lived quietly in New Zealand and later Bristol, where she was finally recognised with an MBE in 2014 at age 93.
