Biography
Merchant Seaman Percy Bates served on the SS Donovania, a cargo vessel carrying vital supplies across the Atlantic. On 18 March 1941, his ship was torpedoed by U-99 southwest of Iceland. The crew took to lifeboats in freezing seas but Percy gave his place in the boat to a younger crewmate and was lost. His sacrifice was typical of the Merchant Navy, which suffered the highest casualty rate of any British service. His widow in Bristol received his posthumous medal in 1946.

Моряк торгового флота Перси Бейтс служил на SS Donovania. Корабль был торпедирован U-99 18 марта 1941 года. Перси уступил своё место в шлюпке молодому матросу и погиб. Торговый флот понёс самые высокие потери среди всех британских служб.
