Biography

First Officer Mary Ellis was one of the most accomplished pilots of the Air Transport Auxiliary, delivering over 1,000 aircraft of 76 different types during the war — including Spitfires, Hurricanes, Lancasters, and Mosquitos. The ATA women flew without radios, weapons, or instrument training, navigating by map and compass.Ellis once delivered a Wellington bomber solo, despite having never flown one before, by reading the pilot's notes during the flight. She continued flying until her 90s and was a tireless advocate for the recognition of ATA women. Her Bristol connections come through ATA operations in the region.
