Lavrenty Ivanovich Avaliani, 1923-1943, a Georgian from Gumati, commanded a squad of the 1372nd Rifle Regiment in the 417th Rifle Division of the 44th Army. He was killed on 10 October 1943 in what was then the Mikhailovsky district of Zaporizhzhia oblast, and the title of Hero of the Soviet Union was conferred on him posthumously on 1 November 1943, three weeks later.
