Aircraftman J Ridley served with No. 134 Squadron RAF, part of No. 151 Wing at Vaenga, near Murmansk. He was killed on 27 September 1941 when Hurricane BD825 crashed on take-off at Vaenga. The Air Ministry casualty file records that two ground crew were on the aircraft's tail when it took off; a published account states the pilot took off unaware the airmen were still there, and that the aircraft rose and then dived into the ground. Aircraftman G Thomas was killed in the same accident, and the pilot, Flight Lieutenant V W Berg, received severe leg injuries. His forenames are not established by the sources consulted — the file records only the initial J.
ⓘHow is each connection known?›
- FROM THE RECORDA record on this platform states this connection, quoted here in its own words.
- CITED SOURCEAn external cited source states this connection.
- SEVERAL SOURCESNo single source states this connection; it follows from several independent pieces of evidence, named here.
- OUR CONCLUSIONThe platform's own editorial judgement, not a statement by a source.
This describes one connection, not the record as a whole. A connection can rest on a direct statement by a source even where the record around it is weakly supported, and the other way round.
Commemorated at
- Severomorsk (Vaenga) Cemetery — Commonwealth war graves in the Soviet Arctic
OUR CONCLUSIONAn earlier version of this archive recorded that the connection exists, but not what it was based on. It is shown as that record left it, and no source is claimed for it.
