Biography

Staff Sergeant Herbert Gapper of Bristol flew Horsa gliders with the Glider Pilot Regiment. On D-Day, he piloted a glider carrying troops of the 6th Airborne Division in Operation Deadstick—the daring coup de main assault on Pegasus Bridge over the Caen Canal. Landing within yards of the bridge at 00:16 on 6 June, his glider was one of the first Allied aircraft to touch down in Normandy. He was killed during the subsequent fighting to hold the bridge against German counter-attacks. He was 22.

Штаб-сержант Герберт Гэппер из Бристоля летал на планерах «Хорса». В день Д он пилотировал планер с десантниками 6-й воздушно-десантной дивизии в операции «Дедстик» — дерзком налёте на мост Пегас. Его планер приземлился в нескольких метрах от моста в 00:16 6 июня. Он погиб в последующих боях.
