Biography
Able Seaman Frank Baptiste from St Pauls in Bristol volunteered for the Royal Navy in 1941. Born to a Jamaican family who had settled in Bristol after World War I, he served aboard the cruiser HMS Jamaica on Arctic convoys to Murmansk and in the Battle of the North Cape, where the German battleship Scharnhorst was sunk in December 1943. He endured the brutal Arctic conditions and constant threat of torpedo attack. After the war, he was active in the Bristol West Indian community and campaigned for the recognition of Black servicemen's contributions.

Матрос Фрэнк Батист из района Сент-Полс в Бристоле пошёл добровольцем в Королевский флот в 1941 году. Родившийся в ямайской семье, обосновавшейся в Бристоле после Первой мировой войны, он служил на крейсере HMS Jamaica на арктических конвоях в Мурманск и в битве у Нордкапа, где был потоплен немецкий линкор «Шарнхорст» в декабре 1943 года. После войны был активен в вест-индийской общине Бристоля.
