Biography
Corporal Elsie Thornton served with the ATS attached to an anti-aircraft battery in Bristol. She operated searchlights and predictors that helped gunners track Luftwaffe bombers during the Bristol Blitz. Though women could not fire the guns, their role was essential. She witnessed the devastating raids that destroyed much of Bristol's city centre.
