Biography
Senior Lieutenant Ekaterina Budanova was one of only two female fighter aces in history. Flying Yak-1 and Yak-7 fighters, she scored 11 aerial victories (6 solo, 5 shared) including several over Stalingrad. She was shot down and killed on 19 July 1943 during a dogfight near Donbass at the age of 26. Her wingmate described her as one of the bravest pilots in the regiment. A Bristol Russian heritage group registered her profile.
