Biography

Private George Henderson was a conscientious objector from Bristol who served as a stretcher bearer with the Royal Army Medical Corps. Like the famous American Desmond Doss, Henderson refused to carry weapons but volunteered for the most dangerous duty — rescuing wounded men under fire.During the advance through Normandy and into Germany, Henderson repeatedly crawled into no-man's land to bring back wounded soldiers, regardless of nationality. His Military Medal citation recorded that he rescued over 40 wounded men during a single engagement near Caen.
