Biography

Starszy Bosman (Chief Petty Officer) Czeslaw Nowicki served aboard ORP Piorun, a Polish destroyer operating under British command. In May 1941, Piorun was part of the force that hunted the German battleship Bismarck. The small destroyer engaged the mighty battleship at close range, signalling "I am a Pole" before opening fire. After the war, Czeslaw settled in Bristol's Polish community. He was deeply proud of his ship's role in the Bismarck action and attended reunions of the Polish Navy Association until his death.
