Biography
Staff Sergeant Cyril Hawkins from Bristol flew Horsa gliders with the Glider Pilot Regiment. On 17 September 1944, he piloted a glider carrying troops of the 1st Airborne Division during Operation Market Garden at Arnhem. After landing successfully under heavy fire, glider pilots were trained to fight as infantry. Cyril was killed during the desperate defence of the Arnhem bridge perimeter. He was 23 years old.

Штаб-сержант Сирил Хоукинс из Бристоля летал на планерах «Хорса» в составе полка планерных пилотов. 17 сентября 1944 года он пилотировал планер с десантниками 1-й воздушно-десантной дивизии во время операции «Маркет-Гарден» под Арнемом. После успешной посадки под сильным огнём лётчики-планеристы сражались как пехота. Сирил погиб при обороне периметра моста Арнема. Ему было 23 года.
