Akhsarbek Magometovich Abaev, 1923-1982, an Ossetian squad commander in the Red Army, born at Khristianovskoye in the Gorskaya ASSR. He was made a Hero of the Soviet Union on 16 May 1944. The published account attributes the award to his conduct in the Kerch-Eltigen operation of November 1943, and states a figure of 32 enemy soldiers killed; the source itself reports that figure as claimed rather than established, and it is carried here on the same terms. After the war he worked in rail transport and then returned to Digora, where he worked on a farm and where he died in 1982.
