Biography

Yevgeny Borisovich Smirnov served as a combat engineer, specialising in bridge construction under fire and mine clearance. He built pontoon bridges across the Dnieper under enemy bombardment, enabling the main forces to cross. His engineering work at the Vistula was cited as critical to the success of the Warsaw liberation. He became a civil engineer in Moscow after the war and moved to Oxford in 2004.

Евгений Борисович Смирнов служил сапёром, специализируясь на строительстве мостов под огнём и разминировании. Строил понтонные мосты через Днепр под бомбардировкой, обеспечивая переправу основных сил. Его инженерная работа на Висле была отмечена как решающая для освобождения Варшавы. После войны стал инженером-строителем в Москве. Переехал в Оксфорд в 2004 году.
