Biography

Senior Sergeant Yakov Pavlov defended a four-storey apartment building in Stalingrad for 60 days against constant German assault, turning it into an impregnable fortress known as Pavlov's House. With just 25 men from multiple nationalities, he held the building from 27 September to 25 November 1942. German maps marked it as a fortress. Pavlov's House became a symbol of the defenders' tenacity at Stalingrad and stands today as a memorial. A Southampton WWII history group registered this iconic story as the 800th veteran in the registry.
