Witold Pilecki

Captain Witold Pilecki was a Polish resistance officer who voluntarily entered Auschwitz concentration camp in 1940 to gather intelligence and organise resistance. He spent nearly three years inside, documenting the atrocities and smuggling reports to the Polish underground and Allied governments. He escaped in April 1943 and later fought in the Warsaw Uprising. His reports were among the earliest detailed accounts of the Holocaust to reach the West. A Nottingham Polish heritage group registered his extraordinary story.
