Biography

Sergeant Major William Clarke served with the Royal Warwickshire Regiment through the major campaigns of the Western theatre. Born in Aston, Birmingham, he enlisted in 1937 and saw action in North Africa, Sicily, and Normandy. He landed on Gold Beach on D-Day and fought through France, Belgium, and into Germany. Awarded the Military Medal for gallantry at the crossing of the Rhine in March 1945, when he led his platoon across under heavy fire. He returned to Birmingham after the war and worked at the Austin car factory in Longbridge.
