Walter Briggs

Bombardier Walter Briggs served with Anti-Aircraft Command, defending British cities from Luftwaffe bombing raids. Initially stationed defending the industrial centres of West Yorkshire, he later served with mobile AA units that accompanied the advancing armies after D-Day. The anti-aircraft gunners worked in freezing conditions through long nights, with the constant roar of their guns causing many to suffer permanent hearing damage. Walter returned to Leeds after the war and worked in the wool industry.
