Biography

Leading Wren Vera Hamilton served in the WRNS at the Y-Station at HMS Forest Moor, intercepting German naval signals. A linguist who spoke fluent German, she was responsible for monitoring U-boat communications that were then forwarded to Bletchley Park for decryption. After the war, she settled in Brighton with her husband and became a translator for an international publishing house. She kept her wartime intelligence work secret until the Official Secrets Act restrictions were relaxed in the 1970s, when she finally told her children what she had really done during the war.
