Vasily Stepanovich Dmitriev was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union for his actions during the Battle of Stalingrad. As a company commander in the 62nd Army under General Chuikov, he led the defence of a key factory district for 47 days. His company held their position against overwhelming odds, losing over 80% of their strength. He later fought at the Vistula and Berlin. He settled in Leeds in 1970.

Василий Степанович Дмитриев был удостоен звания Героя Советского Союза за боевые действия в Сталинградской битве. Командир роты 62-й армии под командованием генерала Чуйкова, он руководил обороной ключевого заводского района в течение 47 дней. Его рота удерживала позиции против превосходящих сил, потеряв более 80% личного состава. Позднее воевал на Висле и в Берлине. Обосновался в Лидсе в 1970 году.
