Biography
Thomas McCarthy served as an Able Seaman aboard HMS Faulknor, a destroyer that escorted convoy routes across the Atlantic and to Murmansk. Born in Bootle, Liverpool, he volunteered for the Royal Navy at age 19. His ship participated in multiple convoy escort missions, protecting merchant vessels carrying vital supplies to Britain and the Soviet Union. During one Arctic Convoy in February 1943, HMS Faulknor helped fight off a U-boat attack that lasted over 12 hours. McCarthy was wounded during the engagement but returned to duty after treatment in Scapa Flow. After the war, he returned to Liverpool and worked in the Mersey docks for 40 years.
