Biography

Petty Officer Stavros Papadopoulos served in the Royal Hellenic Navy, part of the Greek forces in exile that operated alongside the Royal Navy. He served aboard the destroyer Adrias, which famously survived hitting a mine in 1943 that blew off her bow — the crew navigated the crippled ship to safety using improvised repairs. Stavros settled in Brighton after the war and became a respected restaurateur, always keeping a photograph of the Adrias above his bar.
