Ruth Jacobs

Ruth Jacobs drove ambulances for the British Red Cross in Brighton throughout the war. When Brighton was hit by "tip and run" raids—fast low-level Luftwaffe attacks on the south coast—she was often first on the scene. In 1943, she volunteered to drive ambulances in liberated Italy, serving through the brutal fighting at Monte Cassino and Anzio. She was one of the few women to serve so close to the front lines, bringing wounded soldiers back from forward aid stations under shell fire.
