Biography

Senior Sergeant Roza Shanina was a Soviet sniper with 59 confirmed kills, known as one of the first female snipers to serve on the front lines of the 3rd Belorussian Front. She kept a diary that provides one of the most vivid personal accounts of a female soldier's wartime experience. She was killed by a shell fragment on 28 January 1945 during the East Prussian Offensive, aged 20. Her diary was published posthumously and translated into several languages. An Oxford researcher of women in warfare registered her story.
