Robert Ogilvie

Lieutenant Commander Robert Ogilvie from Morningside commanded the corvette HMS Veteran on convoy escort duty in the Atlantic and on the Arctic convoy run to Murmansk. He earned the Distinguished Service Cross for depth-charging and sinking U-356 in the mid-Atlantic in December 1942, saving a convoy of thirty merchant ships from attack. He later commanded escort operations on the perilous Arctic route, enduring storms, ice, and constant threat from U-boats and the Luftwaffe. After the war, he became a harbour master at Leith and was a founding member of the Edinburgh branch of the Arctic Convoy Club.
