Biography
Trooper Rhys Davies was a coal miner from the Rhondda Valley who was called up in 1942 and joined the Queen's Dragoon Guards, Wales's senior cavalry regiment. He crewed a Sherman tank through Normandy, the Falaise Pocket, and the advance into Germany. His tank was knocked out twice — at Villers-Bocage and during Operation Market Garden — but he survived both times. He always said the coal mines prepared him for the claustrophobic conditions inside a tank. After the war, he returned to the mines before retraining as a schoolteacher.
