Biography
Rifleman Reginald Charles Smythe was killed during the rearguard action at Calais in May 1940, fighting to delay the German advance and protect the Dunkirk evacuation. The garrison at Calais was ordered to fight to the last man. Reginald was among the 300 British soldiers killed defending the town. His sacrifice helped ensure over 300,000 Allied troops were evacuated from Dunkirk.
