Ranjit Singh

Havildar Ranjit Singh served with the 4th Indian Division, one of the most decorated formations of the war. He fought at the Battle of Keren in Eritrea, through the North African campaign, and at the Battle of Monte Cassino in Italy. He was wounded at Cassino and spent months recovering in a military hospital. After the war he came to Britain to study, eventually settling in Oxford where he became a respected community elder and frequently spoke at schools about the contribution of Indian soldiers to the Allied victory.
