Biography

Sub-Lieutenant Peter Hall served aboard HMS Bramble, a Halcyon-class minesweeper. Minesweepers performed one of the most dangerous jobs in the navy, clearing mines from shipping lanes to keep ports and supply routes open. Peter's ship was also assigned to escort Arctic convoys. HMS Bramble was sunk during the Battle of the Barents Sea on 31 December 1942, but Peter had been transferred to another vessel just weeks before. He survived the war and studied at Cambridge, becoming a naval historian who wrote extensively about the minesweeper service.
