Percy Jenkins

Percy Jenkins was evacuated from Dunkirk in June 1940 with the Royal Warwickshire Regiment — Birmingham's own. He waded into the sea up to his chest and was picked up by a paddle steamer after waiting 18 hours on the beaches under German air attack. He returned to active service and fought in the Normandy campaign, landing on Gold Beach on D-Day+1. He served through the liberation of France and Belgium. After the war he worked at the Austin car factory in Longbridge and was a regular at the Hall of Memory in Birmingham on Remembrance Sunday.
