Nora Barlow worked as a research assistant at Manchester University during the war, supporting classified work on radar development and early computing. Her mathematical abilities were essential to the team working on magnetron technology — the cavity magnetron invented in Birmingham revolutionised radar and was described as the most important device in the Allied arsenal. After the war, she continued in academic computing.
