Biography

Ensign Noor Inayat Khan, of Indian-Muslim heritage, was a wireless operator for the Special Operations Executive (SOE) in occupied France. She was the first female radio operator sent to France by SOE and maintained the sole communications link between London and the Paris resistance network for months. Betrayed and captured by the Gestapo, she was executed at Dachau concentration camp in September 1944. She was posthumously awarded the George Cross — one of only three women SOE agents to receive this honour.
