Noel Godfrey Chavasse

Captain Noel Godfrey Chavasse is one of only three people to have been awarded the Victoria Cross twice. As a medical officer with the King's (Liverpool) Regiment, he repeatedly went into no man's land under heavy fire to rescue wounded soldiers during the Battle of the Somme (1916) and the Battle of Passchendaele (1917). During the Somme, he personally carried 20 wounded men to safety over 48 hours. At Passchendaele, despite being severely wounded himself, he continued to tend to the wounded until a shell burst killed him. Liverpool honours his memory with a memorial in Abercromby Square, and his story is central to the city's WWI and medical service heritage.
