Biography
Sergeant Nadia Sergeevna Volkova served in the 1077th Anti-Aircraft Regiment which defended Stalingrad during the German siege. Her all-female regiment famously engaged German tanks directly at point-blank range when the ground forces were overrun. She survived the war and emigrated to Liverpool in 1992, where she became known for her talks at local schools about life during the siege.
